One of the saddest results of the Tibetan diaspora is that few Tibetans are now carrying on the traditional arts and in general the quality of artistic practice is in steep decline in Tibet as well as in the refugee community. For a long time I have wanted to ensure the transmission of the practice of thangka painting as a high art. So in hope of reversing this decline I have established a school in northern India, the Shambhala Art School. At present I have six senior students and a handful of new ones. It is my hope to interest many young Tibetans in the preservation and practice of this rich cultural heritage that is valued by so many throughout the modern world.
